I should take some time to introduce the premise of this blog. I am on the leg of a journey into a career transition.
I started dancing when I was 3 years old at the suggestion of my childhood babysitter who noticed I was quite the agile kid. Soon after, this after-school hobby turned into a lifestyle; I wanted to do all forms of dance and I wanted to be GOOD.
My training became year-round, both competitively and pre-professionally, including summer study around the country. I graduated from high school in 2004 and decided to pursue my B.A. in dance, which I completed in 2008.
After a brief (very brief and deferred) stint at Carnegie Mellon University's Master of Arts Management program, I headed west to dance for a small, contemporary ballet company. I learned the ins and outs of what it takes to survive as a starving artist, gaining new perspective on my art. I also acquired a whole family of people in a place I originally relocated to knowing no one.
My dancing plans derailed in January 2010 with news that a pain in my foot was going to merit surgery for multiple conditions I sustained based on my own foot structure and a previous minor injury. So I did what I had to do - toughed out 5 months of dancing like a champ, had the surgery, let the doctor do what he needed to do, and made a huge decision...
...I was going to go back to school to become a nurse.
How on earth do the two of these professions relate to one another? I can speculate about transferable skills all I want. However, I am going to have the chance to live them. And chronicle them. I want to see how big of a difference two years makes, which is my projected RN graduation date.
It's going to be a new beginning in an exciting field, while seeing if I can still remain involved with dance on some level. I am in for a big learning and growing experience, which I don't think I would have been ready for at 18.
So I will take my first class of this new year tomorrow, human growth and development. Stay tuned!
